In adherence with NEP, a student can opt to pursue this programme as 3 year regular degree or as 4 year Honours degree or as 4 year Honours with Research degree .

It is an undergraduate full time 3 year programme spreading over 6 semesters which aims to provide the student with specialised skill sets in different fields like Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cell biology, Immunology, Genetics, Molecular biology, Cell culture techniques (Animal and Plant tissue culture), Analytical techniques, Genetic engineering, Fermentation, Environmental biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics and Intellectual property.

The courses are designed in a way to enable the student to know about the latest technologies in order to be oriented towards biotechnological research and industry. The program has been designed to offer eligible candidates specialization in a wide range of practical skills, while at the same time building competence in many areas of biotechnology. Taking into cognizance the changing needs of the economy and to keep abreast with the latest developments in the field of biotechnology, it is imperative that the learner be updated with current trends. The syllabus of the Biotechnology Graduate Program has been framed against the background of these considerations and aspirations of the learner to ensure a better contribution by them to this growing star industry of the 21st century.

Programme Objectives

  • Define and describe the basic sciences (biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics) that form the backbone of biotechnology.

  • Identify the application of basic sciences to biotechnological applications.

  • Demonstrate basic laboratory skills necessary for biotechnological research.

Pedagogy

Scope

After successful completion of the course, student can opt for higher studies with further educational degrees like

  • M.Sc and Ph.D in biotechnology and allied sciences
 

They would be able to undertake a number of post graduate diplomas to enhance their skill sets to become ready to join the work force. Biotechnology has a large scope and has applications in the health, food, agriculture and environmental sectors. A number of allied careers in scientific documentation and analysis are possibilities that the graduate can opt for.

Biotechnology also encourages self-employment and entrepreneurship among students and inspires them to turn an emerging idea into viable start-ups.
