MASTER OF SCIENCE (MATHEMATICS)

Master of Science

Mathematics | M.Sc.(Maths)

It is a postgraduate full time 2 year programme, subdivided in to 4 semesters. It aims to provide student with specialised knowledge & skill sets in the field of mathematics.

The programme aims to provide detailed knowledge mainly in the area of Analysis, Algebra, probability and statistics along with other core mathematical courses & some mathematical software etc. It also give scope to learn other interdisciplinary courses like Machine learning, Data analytics, cryptography etc. The Post-Graduate Programme will prepare students for both, academia and employability with necessary software skills. The programme gives a solid core education to students who want to work in mathematical science, engineering, or computing. Courses designed are more focused and allow students to develop the depth of their knowledge in mathematics, putting them on the right course to become leaders in their fields. The program also contents a research component, so students can get a feel for how to use their new skills in the real world.

  • Equip the student with skills to analyze problems, formulate an hypothesis, evaluate and validate results, and draw reasonable conclusions.

  • Prepare students to innovate, invent and solve complex mathematical problems using the knowledge of pure and applied mathematics.

  • Inculcate mathematical reasoning and critical thinking in students to carry out scientific investigation objectively without being biased with preconceived notions.

  • Apply knowledge of Mathematics, in all the fields of learning including higher research in mathematical sciences and allied fields.

  • Adjust students completely to the demands of the growing field of Mathematics by lifelong learning.

  • Equip students to communicate effectively with peers and society at large about their field of expertise and related activities.

  • Prepare students to work effectively as an individual, and also as a member or leader in multi-linguistic and multi-disciplinary teams.

Pedagogy

A combination of innovative teaching methods, guest speakers, MOOCs, hands-on experience of new technology, interaction with subject experts provide the student with an ambience that help them flourish their talents in subject specific areas. It encourages team building activities and gives a glimpse of the real world. It helps the student get a perspective and encourages logical thinking with flexibility of execution.

Scope

After successful completion of the course, student can opt for further education like M. Phil or Ph.D. and make their career in the field of research.

M.Sc. Mathematics graduates have many job opportunities in various fields as mathematics is the key subject in many of the sectors like banks, universities, share markets, space agencies, research centres etc. Many careers in academics, science, actuarial sciences, engineering, technology, and computers are accessible with a Master of Mathematics. Various government departments such as naval academy, DRDO, NAL, ISRO, ONGC etc. recruit mathematicians for various posts.

M. Sc. Mathematics graduates can work as a Statistician, Academician, Market Researcher, Research analytic, Quantitative Risk Analyst, Business Analyst, Economic Analytic, Operations Analyst, Actuarial Scientist, Data Analyst, Financial Analyst, Mathematician, Numerical Analyst, Equity Quantitative Analyst, Researcher, Computer System Analyst, Quantitative Developer, Statistical Quality Control etc.

In addition, a postgraduate degree in math makes job seekers more attractive to hiring managers in the fields of business and finance who look for the kind of problem solving and analytical skills that are taught in advanced math courses
